Skye Blake, Cat Info Detective, is a curious cat researcher (not a veterinarian) who sniffs out expert, reliable sources about cats, studies their information, then passes it on to you!

Sometimes there’s not enough evidence for easy answers, so Skye gives you all sides, explains the situation as thoroughly and clearly as possible, and links you to experts on each page.

Sources are at the bottom of each page so you can do more snooping.

Cat Litter Disposal System

litter disposal

Looking for a convenient garbage can to have next to your litter boxes so you don’t have to carry them to the trash?

Something that’s for litter only and will contain odors?

If so, you might find a cat litter disposal system useful for your litter box areas.

These systems are containers you keep near the boxes for easy disposal (think “diaper pail”).

They’re made so you can easily dump waste in when scooping.

They collect the waste in plastic or biodegradable bags and seal in odors (or at least reduce them). Then you throw away the bags.

You’ll have to buy bags or liners, deodorizers, filters, etc. (depending on the brand), so that’s an ongoing expense.

Liners

cat claws - can scratch holes in litter liners

Liners are available for litter boxes just like your kitchen trash can.

The idea is to lift the liner when the litter’s dirty, tie it up and throw it away.

There’s only one problem with this…

Most cats’ claws slice up liners and urine pools underneath them in the bottom, making a smelly mess.

That certainly defeats the purpose! Some cats don’t like the feel of the plastic, either.

Disposal systems and liners are available at pet stores and online suppliers like Chewy and Amazon.

Sources

Sources used on this website are either primary or secondary.

Primary sources are always preferable and have the most reliable information because they’re original and directly referenced.

Scientific abstracts and data are good examples of primary sources.

Secondary sources are weaker because they usually consist of opinions or articles that give no sources of their own.

However, sometimes they refer to primary sources.

When I use secondary sources, most are those with some authority, such as veterinarian or cat behaviorist books and articles.
